Blogger Introduction:
The City of New Haven, New Haven Public Schools, and the United Way of Greater New Haven have partnered to develop a part of the School Change Initiative called Boost!, a system to support children’s overall development. Lauren is one of three AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members working with the United Way on this Boost! project.
Stationed at Metropolitan Business Academy, Lauren helps to coordinate community resources to support student achievement. Over the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school year, she will build relationships between the school and the community by welcoming non-profit organizations and other services into classrooms and afterschool activities.
This is not the first time Lauren has volunteered for her community. Throughout her time at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), she led several student clubs such as Anthropology Club and LGBT Prism Club, and participated in others as an officer like in Iota Iota Iota (Triota), the National Women’s Studies Honor Society Kappa Chapter. Lauren feels drawn to learning about other cultures and communities, and has even studied abroad in Guatemala, where she completed a health field study exploring the political, social, and cultural determinants of health.
In general, Lauren has dabbled with fundraising, grant writing, recruitment, and community organizing. For four years she has served as an officer on the Board of Directors for the CT Stonewall Foundation.
After college, Lauren took a year off to weigh her options. After volunteering for six months at Yale-New Haven Hospital's Smilow Cancer Hospital, she decided to apply for National Service. "It seems right for me at this time to give back to the City that provided me with so much during my education."
