Tell us a little about how you Live United by giving, advocating and volunteering in the community.

Jan McCray the program administrator for Smart About Money (SAM) a free budget coaching program assisting low to moderate income residents of New Haven, West Haven, East Haven and Hamden set and achieve financial goals through a series of one on one sessions with trained volunteer budget coaches for period of six months. Jan also has lead responsibility for community initiatives including New Haven County’s Emergency Food and Shelter National Program (EFSP) which invests critical dollars in emergency services (e.g. food insecurity, rental eviction and mortgage foreclosure prevention, emergency shelter and energy assistance) to programming providing services to the residents of New Haven County.

Jan also assists with the administration of a large array of United Way’s community investment strategies focusing on investments to increase financial stability for individuals and families in our region and designed to meet the changing needs of Greater New Haven, stimulate community growth and demonstrate “results that matter” .

Jan is a member of the New Haven Continuum's Steering Committee, the Annual Point In Time Volunteer Recruitment Committee, works with the New Haven Asset Building Collaborative, New Haven Homeless Health Care Advisory Board and The New Haven Re-Entry Round Table.

Jan has served as a two term board co-chair an two term membership chair of the Greater New Haven Association of Volunteer Administrators (GNHAVA). A professional membership organization uniting individuals engaged in volunteer management and dedicated to enhancing the competency of volunteer administrators and strengthening the profession of volunteer resource management. Jan is also a member of New Haven County’s Emergency Food Council. She has served as a Community Representative for Community Foundation of Greater New Haven’s Parents and Communities for Kids Program (PACK) focused on engaging families from Ansonia, New Haven's Hill neighborhood and the Highwood-Newhallville neighborhoods of New Haven and Hamden in learning activities.

As an alumni of Leadership Greater New Haven where she worked with fellow teammates to establish "The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s Non-Traditional Scholarship". This scholarship bridges funding gaps for greater New Haven residents who do not meet traditional scholarship qualifications, were previously unable to complete higher education and are currently working towards economic self-sufficiency. Jan is also a recipient of New Haven Business Times, Forty Under 40 Award for Professional Achievement and Community Involvement.
