Tell us a little about how you Live United by giving, advocating and volunteering in the community.

Since I can remember, community service has always been important to me. I spent time volunteering at home and abroad, coaching sports team, working with the Red Cross, and devoting time to organizations such as Big Brother/ Big Sisters, and Special Olympics throughout high school and college. I traveled to Quito, Ecuador for a two week service trip, tutoring students in English and building a forth floor to a school structure in a low-income area. Furthermore, I spent my summer of 2010 in Moshi, Tanzania, where I taught at a primary school and advocated for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

After graduating college at Western Connecticut State University with a BA in Social Sciences, I wanted to continue serving the country and various communities in the United States, and joined AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). I spent 10 months volunteering as a corps member with NCCC, traveling across the midwest region of the United States, working in 5 major areas: disaster relief, environmental stewardship, energy conservation, infrastructure improvement and urban and rural development. I traveled to 7 states, worked on two disaster relief projects, and amassed 1800 hours of community service. This is one of my most fulfilling experiences in life!

I now work as an AmeriCorps VISTA, (Volunteers in Service to America) as part of the Boost! team, coinciding with the New Haven School Change Initiative. I am working in Barnard Environmental Magnet School, coordinating community resources to support student achievement.
