United Way Announces 2011 Alexis de Tocqueville Society, Herbert H. Pearce Award

On a beautiful fall evening on October 5th, nearly 200 people gathered at The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library to honor Frank Turner and Ellen Tillotson, and to recognize Yale University donors for their outstanding leadership in the Greater New Haven community.

It was fitting that an event to thank donors for their generosity to United Way and to the common good was held at Yale's Beinecke Library.  Several original de Tocqueville manuscripts are part of the Beinecke's impressive literary collection and were on display for guests.  President Rick Levin welcomed guests, and spoke about Alexis de Tocqueville, his insightful observations about America, and the strong partnership between Yale University and United Way of Greater New Haven.

Yale Champions “Give Every Child a Chance”

Representatives from across campus recently gathered to kick-off Yale’s 2011-2012 United Way Campaign. Fifty volunteer champions convened at the Sterling Hall of Medicine and Sterling Memorial Library orientations, which were planned to unite volunteers with United Way staff, as well as with the University’s Campaign committee. Madeline Ravich, Executive Director of The Diaper Bank and Yale School of Management alumnus, also offered remarks on the need to give babies a healthy start in life.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Last week, the Yale School of Medicine posed the question, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” to faculty, students, and staff in the Department of Physiology. With “Give Every Child a Chance” as Yale’s United Way Campaign theme this year, this event was designed as a fun competition to raise money and awareness about United Way’s involvement in creating educational opportunities for low-income children and youth.

Quality Education for All

By the end of Waiting for Superman, Davis Guggenheim’s new documentary about America’s failing education system, I – like the parents and students in the film – was trembling on the edge of my seat, heart palpitating, breathlessly awaiting the lottery results, wondering “Which lucky child will make it into the charter school of her/his choice?”
