Boost! Works to Ensure Student Success

On January 26, 2012, United Way was invited to present on the Boost! initiative at the first meeting of the Interagency Council on Ending the Achievement Gap.  The Council wanted to learn more about the Boost! model of providing wraparound services for children and youth so that they are more successful in school.  The Council, chaired by Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman and Commissioner Stefan Pryor from the State Department of Education, applauded the work of Boost! and recognized the importance of: using data to make thoughtful decisions about students' needs; connecting the schools and community-based programs so that they are working together to benefit children; and having an entity like United Way to serve as the "glue" to help ensure this coordination and strategic thinking happen.

United Way's Jennifer Heath, Executive Vice President and Laoise King, Vice President for Education took turns explaining how Boost! works and that it shares the goals of the New Haven School Change Initiative: to close the achievement gap with the state, cut the dropout rate in half, and ensure that every graduating student has the preparation and resources they need to succeed in college.

ALIVE program fosters positive change in troubled students

In the ALIVE classroom, students are invited to make meaningful connections between their lives and their schoolwork. Through co-teaching and the use of art, drama, music and poetry, students express themselves and gain a stronger sense of self-worth and belonging.

“Students are affected by stress and that gets in the way of their abilities to get the most out of their school experience,” said Dr. Nisha Sajnani, director of drama therapy, community health, and ALIVE School Based Programs at the Post Traumatic Stress Center.

2011 Reflections and Gratitude

There is much to be grateful for in 2011.  It is the time of year to reflect, celebrate with friends and family and to be hopeful for the future.  We have done our reflection and we are grateful to live and work in Greater New Haven.

The New Haven Food Truck: Creating Healthy Kids and Strong Communities

We all have summer memories from when we were kids. One of my enduring summer memories is swimming at our local pool.  I spent lots of hours playing in the water and practicing with the swim team.

New Haven Food Truck

United Way of Greater New Haven and New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) unveiled Connecticut's first Summer Food Truck that will deliver free, nutritious meals to kids throughout the city.  The Summer Food Truck, which is made possible by a grant from United Way, will allow NHPS's Central Kitchen to provide two free meals per weekday – 1,000 free meals a day – to children living in under-served neighborhoods throughout New Haven.  Federal funds will pay for the program.

NHPS and United Way are partners in the Connecticut No Kid Hungry Campaign, an initiative led by End Hunger Connecticut!, Governor Malloy, and Share Our Strength, to end childhood hunger in Connecticut by 2015.  This is the first food truck to serve summer meals to children and youth in Connecticut.

Boost! Team at Troup School Hosts CMT Family Bingo Night

Troup School wanted to make sure that parents and children are well prepared for the upcoming Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMTs), so the school’s Boost! work team, led by Coordinator, Abby Ostruzka, hosted a fun and informative CMT Bingo Night on Wednesday, February 16th.  The family atmosphere proved to be a fun way to help familiarize parents with the different sections of the CMTs, how they are scored, the types of questions their children will see, and strategies for success.

"The Economics of a Great Education"

As a New Haven resident and education advocate, I have been thrilled to see New Haven Public Schools and various other philanthropic and community organizations embracing bold strategies for school improvement. There is a wonderful energy across the city, with adults and youth alike thinking about what it would take to give every student what they need (both academically and financially) to get to and through college successfully. In the spirit of continuing this conversation and learning from successes in other states, my organization, the Connecticut Black Alliance for Educational Options (CT BAEO) is hosting a FREE event next Saturday, February 5, at Yale Law School.
