Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free tax preparation program, saved local residents over $517,000 in tax preparation fees. This year, trained volunteers prepared over 3,500 tax returns at 14 locations in New Haven, West Haven, and Woodbridge helping residents claim over $5.8 million in tax refunds.
CAANH offers a variety of programs and services designed to educate, motivate, and support our clients on their pathway to prosperity. CAANH programs include enegry assistance, weatherization and financial education.
The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program was created in 1983 to supplement the work of local social service organizations within the United States, both private and governmental, to help people in need of emergency assistance. This collaborative effort between the private and public sectors has provided over $3.4 billion in Federal funds during its 27-year history.
The program provides case management, entitlement assessments, ESL, computer skills training, financial education, and small business development to greater New Haven residents (primarily Latino/Hispanic residents of the Fairhaven section of New Haven) to build employability skills, sound financial behaviors, and the disciplines needed to obtain financial stability. Program anticipates providing benefit screenings to 600 individuals, financial education to 250 individuals, small business training to 75 individuals, and computer training to 198 individuals.
