Reflections on New Haven's Public Innovator's Lab in Education

When you face outward as an organization you focus on people’s aspirations, you rethink the work that you do, you craft different relationships with other organizations and you question many aspects of your structure and function. This was the message we heard this past week from Rich Harwood, CEO of the Harwood Institute. I met Rich this past spring as part of the Education Mobilization Cohort led by United Way Worldwide.

My Harwood Institute experience

Running a non-profit is a pretty tough business. When I’m presented with the opportunity to attend a free workshop to learn new tools and strategies that can benefit my organization and the people it serves, I take advantage of it. I am the Director of STRIVE-New Haven, a United Way partner agency, and I recently attended a one-day Harwood Institute seminar on October 21. It was a day that inspired great thought and conversation, and was certainly a call to action for myself and the other individuals represented in the room to turn outward towards our community.

Harwood Institute Event

As a United Way board member, I attended on the first day and came back for part of the second day (my schedule did not allow for the full day which I would have done gladly).  Not only did the time spent at the event get me to think deeply, but also it made for much self reflection during the days following.

Turning Outward

Last Week United Way Staff, Board Members, and community volunteers gathered for a day long workshop with The Harwood Institute to learn about how to strengthen our connection with the Community.  Founder of the Institute, Richard Hardwood lead the discussion and encouraged the group to "turn outward" to the community.  To turn outward, we must have an open and honest discussion with the United Way community around their shared aspirations.  Identifing these shared aspirations will allow us to align our work around what is real for our community.

Boost! Pilot Program has Started in School

As the days of August draw to a close, the energy that accompanies the beginning of a new school year feels palpable.  Here at United Way, we’ve spent all summer “in school,” working hard on the Boost! partnership, one of the components of the School Change Initiative in New Haven.

Riding the Wave

A lesson I took from the Harwood Innovator's Lab is that successful movements combine technical opportunities of expert knowledge and timed momentum of public knowledge. I wrote this idea in my notes as an equation,

(Expert Knowledge + Public Knowledge) x Timing = Political Will To Change.

United Way and Harwood Institute Team Up!

United Way of Greater New Haven is collaborating with the Harwood Institute to accelerate our efforts to create results in education. Harwood is United Way’ World Wide's signature partner for both their education mobilization groups and The Campaign for the Common Good.

There are some tremendous examples of what The Harwood Institute has done for other large national organizations like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. If we can replicate what they have done for them at some level then we will be in really good shape.
