Learning United: Boost! contributes to the ambitious School Change Initiative in New Haven

 

“We will be successful, we will be the model.”

This was the rallying cry of Jack Healy, United Way president and CEO, to an audience of invited guests convened last May to hear a representative from the Obama administration hail New Haven as one of six places in the country where school-community partnerships are making a difference in student performance.

Dyann Sousa is getting ready to dismiss her third grade class at the end of a September day. The children are restless, animated, anxious to go. At barely a whisper, she sing-songs an instruction to quiet down. In a moment, the children are calm, and sent on their way.

Sousa is a “second career” teacher who knows how to manage a classroom and clearly has a gift for connecting with children. Nonetheless, her 2011-2012 third grade class at Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School had her worried.

For seventeen years, Yale Model Congress has devoted itself to staging conferences that provide our high school delegate with the opportunity to assume the responsibilities of our elected representatives and to tackle the issues that face our nation. We strive to provide delegates with an engaging, fulfilling, and intimate environment in which to fight for their legislation, debate their opinions, and deepen their understanding of how our government works.

  • The next few years of your life are your defining years….

These and many more sentiments might be true for you and your young adult, but what about the many young adults “aging out” of Connecticut’s foster care system with no parent figure, no family, no plans for college and no idea about their “defining years”?

Metropolitan Business Academy among Winners of 2011 CT Student Innovation Expo

United Way would like to congratulate a Boost! school for being among the winners of the 2011 CT Student Innovation Expo at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Connecticut on May 21, 2011.

Metropolitan Business Academy was named the winner in three categories in the “Outstanding Bio21” award: Exhibition Booth, Presentation & Prototype. They also won Outstanding Marketing Campaign in the “Information Technology Research and Development” category.
