United Way of Greater New Haven helps ensure that the children of this region are ready to learn when they enter school and have a solid foundation for lifelong success.
HISTORY
What is Success By 6?
Success By 6 is the nation's largest community-based early childhood movement. Based on long term research
on brain development, quality childcare, and early intervention, the goal of Success By 6 is to ensure that all children 0-6 are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed when they enter school.
Why Success By 6?
United Way launched Success By 6 in September 2004 based on the results from our Community Compass Partnership and our own knowledge of community needs.
Compass findings indicated a direct correlation between the economic disparities that exist in the greater New Haven region and educational success. Children who live in poverty are less likely to have access to the quality early learning experiences which prepare them for success in school.
ONE in THREE
children in New Haven lives in a family whose annual income falls below the Federal Poverty Level ($16,090).
An average 34% of children in the New Haven region
do not attend preschool, nursery school or Head Start before beginning kindergarten.
Preparation gaps that occur when children lack quality early learning experiences can lead to achievement gaps as they struggle throughout their school careers. These gaps place children at a disadvantage right from the start and can affect their chances for success in school and in later life.
United Way of Greater New Haven realized it had an opportunity and an obligation to address these disturbing conditions. By becoming one of over 360 United Ways in the United States and Canada to adopt Success By 6, we are helping to give all our children the tools they need to be successful.
