Webster Banks Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Free Ice Cream

On Monday, Oct. 11, the public is invited to join the United Way of Greater New Haven in celebrating Webster Bank’s 75th anniversary with a free ice cream giveaway in New Haven. The “Day of Giving” event will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Haven Green at Temple and Elm streets and will feature a Webster treat truck giving away free ice cream while supplies last.

The United Way is Webster Bank’s primary philanthropy. “Our partnership began when Webster was founded during the Great Depression and the United Way was known locally as the Community Chest,” said Jack Healy, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater New Haven. “Webster Bank partners with the United Way because Webster believes the United Way is the most efficient, donor-friendly way to provide a broad safety net of human services and because the United Way’s values are so closely aligned with Webster’s values.”

Webster Bank was founded on Oct. 11, 1935, in an 11-by-38-foot office in Waterbury, Conn., by Harold Webster Smith when he was 24 years old. Today, Webster is a full-service regional commercial bank led by the founder’s son, James C. Smith, with $17.7 billion in assets and a service area that stretches from Westchester County, N.Y., to Boston.
