Touch-A-Truck provides the opportunity for children to get close to their favorite full-sized vehicles in a protected environment. Two dozen vehicles are expected from various municipal offices, including the Fire, Police, Parks and Public Works departments, as well as vehicles from local companies that help make the event possible, such as East River Energy.

The price of admission is disposable diapers that are being collected for United Way’s Healthy Baby Diaper Drive and will be distributed free to local families in need through Shoreline nonprofit agencies and The Diaper Bank. All diapers and package sizes are needed and accepted.

Hundreds of families attended the 2008 “Touch-A-Truck” event, which collected more than 25,000 diapers for agencies in Branford, Guilford and Madison. Once again, the Rotary will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers, compliments of A. Vigliotti Construction.

“This is a terrific event that is as fun for the children as it is for the parents,” said Assistant Fire Chief Shaun Heffernan. “It’s the perfect event for everyone to come out and enjoy, along with getting a first-hand look at the vehicles that serve our community.”

“Children really get a thrill out of exploring these vehicles,” said Jack Healy, president and chief executive officer, United Way of Greater New Haven. “This event is both a wonderful educational opportunity and a chance to raise awareness and donations that enable more children in our cities and towns to start life happy and healthy.”

Organizers said the event is made possible through the support of East River Energy, A. Vigliotti Construction, the Fire Department, Police Department, Branford Counseling Center, Recreation Department, Department of Public Works, Rotary, Shore Publishing, WTNH-Channel 8, Wendy’s Restaurants and The Diaper Bank.

Diapers can be donated at the Branford Recreation Department (46 Church Street, Branford CT 06405) through November 6.
