The annual Alexis de Tocqueville Society Herbert H. Pearce Award is presented by United Way of Greater New Haven to those who embody the American spirit of giving and volunteerism witnessed by Alexis de Tocqueville as he traveled the United States in the mid 1800's. Tocqueville observed that Americans help each other in times of need and wrote, "I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare, and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another."

The recipients truly illustrate the highest caliber of civic leadership. They have made made significant contributions to our community and continue to inspire others to join them along the way. The award is well earned and much deserved!

The deToqueville award has never been compromised. We are all blessed with inspirational leadership that is reflected in the examples provided by Andy and Charlie. Included in the rewards for the work that we do, together, are the relationships we build with outstanding individuals from diverse sectors. I am proud of my friends and our work to raise and level the playing field.
