Fund for women, girls aiming for $1M endowment by end of 2010

The work of the Women and Girls group is important to United Way because of our complimentary work in the area of Education.  For that reason, we are sharing this article published in the New Haven Register on Monday, June 8, 2009.

For years, the Community Fund for Women and Girls has been faced with requests for funding that far exceed the amount the organization has been able to provide. This year, the fund’s board members and volunteers have decided to do something about it.

The Community Fund for Women and Girls, a part of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, recently began a campaign to raise $1 million by Dec. 31, 2010.

If successful, funds raised from the campaign will double the size of the organization’s current endowment, according to Helene Robbins, incoming chairwoman of the fund advisory committee.

Each year, the fund receives applications for grant money from organizations and projects that aim to improve situations for women and girls regarding issues of health, violence, political participation and education, said fund Chief Philanthropic Officer Sharon Cappetta.
