The New Haven Register recently reported that four Greater New Haven communities have been awarded more than $1.46 million in federal grants from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
According to the Register, the municipalities, Hamden, Milford, New Haven and West Haven, each received more than $100,000, with New Haven receiving more than $900,000. The grants, awarded to "entitlement communities" and states, are designed to be flexible in their use. The individual jurisdictions determine on what the money should be spent. HUD oversees that what the projects and programs the money is being spent on is legal.
