VITA Program

 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The VITA Program offers free tax preparation for low to moderate income individuals and families and is open to anyone in the community. All volunteers are fully trained and certified by the IRS and can help you with special credits for which you may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly. Volunteers will also assist in the ability to e-file the returns, which will allow the filers to receive their refunds in half the time (compared to returns filed on paper), and even faster if they have their refund deposited directly into a bank account.

United Way has partnered with Strive and New Life Corporation to support the VITA program. To learn more, please visit the websites below.

People work hard for their money, and STRIVE is providing the VITA program as part of their strategy to create a more financially literate consumer in New Haven. Having your taxes prepared at a VITA site reduces the use of paid tax preparers which offer an array of predatory products and services that only function to take the hard earned returns from working families.

STRIVE VITA sites will be open on Thursdays evenings from 4–8 starting January 29th. Click here to find one near you or call (203) 777-1720 for an appointment or for more information.

New Life Corporation recruits a volunteer workforce of over 80 community residents and runs various VITA sites in the cities of New Haven and West Haven. New Life Corporation trains and certifies the volunteers who prepare and electronically file income taxes throughout the neighborhood VITA sites. By combining tax assistance with hands-on training, the program assists clients in better understanding their personal and family finances while also helping to ensure that they receive all of the proper deductions that they are entitled to.  Visit New Life Corporation for further information.
