The prestigious United Way Tocqueville Society is a national, philanthropic society honoring individuals who annually give $10,000 or more to United Way. Tocqueville members are individuals who understand the need to lead by example in their communities and their organizations.

Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat, toured the United States applauding the voluntary spirit of American society.  His observations formed the 1835 work "Democracy in America", a detailed study of American society, culture and politics.  Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped one another in times of need. 

"I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare; and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another."

Ninety one individuals or couples are now members of the United Way Tocqueville Society.  There are 490 Tocqueville Societies in communities across the United States,  25,475 members nationwide who given $514M and since 1984, the Tocqueville Society has cumulatively given over $6,185,000,000 to be invested in the communities where they live and work. 

Nationwide, over 525 individuals and families have made plans to, or have endowed their annual Tocqueville gift by joining the Legacy Society.  This is conservatively estimated to have a $132,000,000 current and future impact on endowments held by United Ways and will generate a Tocqueville level gift in their name in perpetuity.  These Legacy Society gifts will improve lives far into the future.  Please consider becoming a member of the Legacy Society.
