Though he wasn’t crowned “Chopped” champion on Tuesday night’s episode of the Food Network show, Chef Tim Cipriano returned home to 20,000 New Haven students who needed him – and because of that, he felt victorious.
One of the reasons he went on the show, he said, was “to use it as a platform for advocacy for feeding kids real food and ending childhood hunger. Using the show as a platform for a cause is so much better than doing it just to say you did it.”
When Marna Borgstrom began working at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1979, she told her husband Eric it would be a short stint in the Elm City and they would soon return “home” to the San Francisco Bay area. More than three decades later, they not only remain here but have become two of the local community’s biggest champions.
Having arrived in the Elm City just last year, First Niagara Bank is a relative newcomer to New Haven but has made its presence known quickly and profoundly – through its generous philanthropy in the community.
Bank officials and employees were presented Friday with an award honoring the Bank as United Way’s 2012 Corporate Community Champion, recognizing the company’s charitable support and civic leadership.

Parents arrived early Saturday morning at the New Gateway Community College fired up ready to learn. They weren’t there to prepare for a new career in medical radiography or information technology. They were there to participate in the city’s first Parent University, a day of workshops, forums and classes geared to parents and caretakers of students in New Haven public schools.
United Way of Greater New Haven has named First Niagara Bank the 2012 Corporate Community Champion for its philanthropic support and civic leadership.
This recognition is given annually to an organization that has made significant contributions to advance the common good in the community. First Niagara was selected for its leadership as a corporate sponsor, its engaged and generous workforce, and its strategic grant-making in New Haven.

United Way of Greater New Haven is in a unique position to see the big picture. We work with over 150 non-profits in our area and through these partnerships; have a full understanding of the needs in the community. We work closely together to identify solutions and we partner with these individuals and organizations to address those needs. It’s like knitting; we solidify connections to implement these solutions. We are honored and proud to share that one of our Women’s Initiative’s signature projects, the New Haven Food Truck, has been recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. with its Global Poverty Leadership Award.
The food truck, which recently completed its second summer on the road, delivers free meals to New Haven youths under age 18 during the summer, when those who rely on free meals during the school year are at risk of going hungry.
For over 60 years, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have been strong supporters of the United Way both at the national and local levels. Today, AT&T continues this legacy of support through a contribution of $49,500 to United Way of Greater New Haven. In 2012 alone, AT&T gave $5.77 million to 574 local United Ways across the country.

With Hurricane Sandy forecast to potentially hit Connecticut in the coming days, Gov. Dannel Malloy today urged residents to call the 2-1-1 information line if they need assistance during or after the storm.
The 2-1-1 service, which is supported by Connecticut United Ways and the state, is a free hotline that connects residents to services they need. Its staff also is involved in local disaster planning, response and recovery and, as such, can be a great resource during severe weather events.

United Way's partnerships with businesses, individuals and non-profits throughout the region help create change in our community. This week, it was our turn to provide something back as an employee benefit to Covidien workers as a thank you for our long-standing partnership.
Yale School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern and University Provost Peter Salovey will lead as co-chairs for the University’s 2012-2013 United Way Campaign. The Campaign, Give Every Child a Chance, kicked off with a series of events this month. (See photos here.)
New Haven’s work on engaging the community as part of the School Change Initiative has been hailed by the White House as a success story that the Obama Administration hopes to spread to other communities. United Way of Greater New Haven President and CEO Jack Healy traveled to Washington, DC this week to share United Way’s experience with other school districts involved with education reform.
“There is some exciting work going on in education reform,” said Healy, “and New Haven’s achievements are at the forefront. There was a lot of learning and sharing of information and best practices. The groups involved felt it was extremely important to share information on what is being learned in school reform efforts, and a network has been set up to help us continue to communicate.”

Boost! and New Haven Promise work hand-in-hand to help New Haven students succeed. Boost! helps to make sure students receive the non-academic support they need, and New Haven Promise offers subsidized in-state college tuition to students who maintain grades and attendence and perform community service. Together, they help mobilize the community around the common goal of improving our schools.
