Yale University hosted a book drive which ran from Sept. 7 until Sept. 30 as part of the United Way Day of Caring and will give 10 percent of the profits from the books to New Haven Reads, which provides books to elementary and middle school students. Books are Fun — a Louisville, Colo.-based subsidiary of Reader’s Digest — provided the more than 200 books on sale at the fair. The selections at the fair covered a broad spectrum of topics, from the Berenstain Bears to literature on the great unknowns of outer space.

Today marks as a special day for fifteen individuals who graduated from the 105th class of STRIVE-New Haven, Inc.   These individuals walked proudly to the front of the room at the United Church on the Green to receive their diplomas.  They told their personal stories of how difficult of a commitment it was, but how they were pleased with the results.   This was a chance at making a difference not only for themselves, but for their families too.  STRIVE-New Haven Inc.

For the past two years, volunteers from the Knights of Columbus have participated in United Way's Annual Days of Caring at the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden.  The Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop has a long standing history with the citizens of the Greater New Haven area. They provide experimental learning workshops for families, children and students, completing over 70,000 projects a year and educating the public of the hisitorical importance of the Industrial Revolution. However, there is alot of prep work that goes into preparing these types of projects for the children.

The staff of Seward & Monde took a day out of the office and headed to Ferry Street to help clean up St. Francis and St. Rose of Lima School. Upon their arrival they immediatly set to work, grabbing rakes and shovels and cleaning up the surrounding area of the school. They were energetic and happy to help, which was very apparent from their hard work. For one Seward & Monde employee, this clean up was personal...He went to school there! It was great to see him be able to give back to the school that gave him part of his education. Thanks again Seward & Monde!

On September 21st Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) delivered 11,000 school supplies to Hillhouse High School for United Way's Days of Caring. Days of Caring is an annual two-day event where hundreds of volunteers are recruited across the community to participate in various hands-on projects or drives that help community organizations and schools.

Hillhouse High School gave YNHH and United Way of Greater New Haven (UWGNH) a warm welcome with their marching band as their junior ROTC escorted YNHH CEO, Marna Borgstrom, Superintendent of Schools, Reggie Mayo, UWNGH CEO, Jack Healy and the YNHH School supply drive committee (listed below). The enthusiasm and warmth was energizing and the level of talent and spirit from the students was palpable.

YNHH has been hosting the school supply drive for several years and has enabled several students to participate in their education with confidence.

Carmody & Torrance assisted NNHR in organizing the clothing and furniture that was collected during United Way's Days of Caring project in New Haven. This group proudly wears their "LIVE UNITED" shirts as they sort through the items.
