Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Last week, the Yale School of Medicine posed the question, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” to faculty, students, and staff in the Department of Physiology. With “Give Every Child a Chance” as Yale’s United Way Campaign theme this year, this event was designed as a fun competition to raise money and awareness about United Way’s involvement in creating educational opportunities for low-income children and youth.

22 Chili Recipes, 4 Judges, 1 Winner, and $2,415 Raised for United Way.

Yale University’s second annual “Chili Throwdown” raised over $2,400, more than twice the amount raised last year.  Proceeds for the event that took place Friday, November 5, 2010, went to United Way.  Chili was made by Yale staff members and students across campus, and with a minimum $5 donation at the door, guests could sample as many chili entries as they wished.

NEW HAVEN — Helping others has always been a way of life for Diane Turner, associate librarian for human resources at Yale University.

Committed to uplifting the community, Turner is an active member of several organizations and has served on a number of boards over the years, she said. Now, Turner is incoming chairwoman of United Way of Greater New Haven’s 2009 campaign, led this year by Yale.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity,” she said. “I know it’s a big responsibility, but the cause is also big. What we’re trying to achieve is really important. I’m excited and eager to help meet the goals.”

This year’s campaign goal: $5.5 million, Turner said.

United Way of Greater New Haven kicked off the first annual Days of Action Monday, June 22, and I wanted to go out and see first hand the amazing work that was being done around Greater New Haven. To my surprise and delight, I was able  to work along side 2 board members and our campaign chair!
