Questioning How We Teach Young Children

The New York Times recently reported about how cognitive neuroscience is helping to clarify when young brains are best able to grasp fundamental concepts and how basic academic skills are taught. 

"For much of the last century, educators and many scientists believed that children could not learn math at all before the age of five, that their brains simply were not ready. But recent research has turned that assumption on its head — that, and a host of other conventional wisdom about geometry, reading, language and self-control in class."

 

The Cost of High School Dropouts

The New York Times recently reported about a Northeastern University study that used census and other government data to track the employment, workplace, parenting and criminal justice experiences of young high school dropouts.

The report puts the collective cost to the nation over the working life of each high school dropout at $292,000.

Jobless Suburbanites Need Help Too!

Recently the New York Times published an article about how job loss is affecting middle class suburbs

“It is hard enough for the unemployed and others struggling financially to figure out how to obtain social services like food stamps, counseling and utility assistance for the first time.”
