In anticipation of United Way of Greater New Haven's administration of federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP) for fiscal year 2011, a competitive application process for New Haven County nonprofits, faith-based, and government agencies is accepting proposals for emergency services program funding.Other organizations such as smaller emerging nonprofits are encouraged to apply in partnership with an eligible 501(c)3 organization that agrees to serve as the fiscal agent for the grant.
We have two HUD-certified counselors (supported by the United Way) on staff who work with homeowners in danger of foreclosure to find solutions that are affordable for the homeowner and reasonable for the lender. The process can be long, and often needs to be very creative to make it work. In one case, we helped a daughter and mother who purchased a property together.
We are working hard to keep pace with the steady number of homeowners who come to us for foreclosure prevention services. It’s a scary process that can be lengthy, often taking more than a year to resolve; stressful, when confronted with the possibility of having your family’s home taken away; and exhausting, in the continual need to respond to repeated requests from the lender for verification of financial information.
This week The Partnership for Strong Communities’ Housing Policy Brief reported;
“Connecticut has higher housing costs than most other states, according to 2008 American Community Survey (ACS) data. The ACS allows the Census and researchers to keep an eye on trends between the more intensive 10-year census”.
With such dire financial strains encroached around the homes of so many, greater New Haven nonprofits are preparing to help more individuals and families than ever before acquire and maintain housing through the winter and up to 15 months thereafter. Thanks to an infusion of American Recovery Re-Investment Act, Greater New Haven nonprofits will be able to meet our communities increasing demand for emergency permanent housing assistance to individuals and families on the brink of homelessness or currently residing in emergency shelters.
