Yale-New Haven Hospital is Serving Up Something Special!

Ronald McDonald House has been hosting a stream of volunteer groups from our friends at Yale-New Haven Hospital.  Back in December, the Admitting Department from the hosptial became the fourth group to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House.  The group of nine volunteers woke up early and cooked up a fantastic breakfast for the residents at the home.  The bellies of parents and children alike were filled with bacon, eggs, bagels and much more.  Yale-New Haven Hospital is really doing their part to LIVE UNITED.

Roses are Red... And students from Quinnipiac are Amazing!

During the month of October, Quinnipiac University's Student Media Group took time out of their weekend to give back to their community.  Fourteen students got down and dirty by helping to clean up the greenhouse at Roses for Autism, an organization in Guilford that provides individuals on the autism spectrum the chance to learn the skills necessary to maintain meaningful employment.

University of New Haven Days of Caring 2011

This past week, faculty and staff -and even the women's lacrosse team- took part in the University of New Haven's Days of Caring 2011.  The 71 volunteers helped out throughout the day at four different organizations.  At the West Haven Child Development Center, volunteers took part in a variety of tasks.  Some participants took care of children, others painted classrooms, and a few cleaned up the playground.  Then at the West Haven Community House, four dedicated volunteers cleaned up a huge playground area that hadn't seen much love since Hurricane Irene.

Carmody & Torrance Making a Difference!

Staff from Carmody & Torrance have been making a difference in this community for many years during Days of Caring.  Every year they go to a different non-profit and volunteer their time, effort and energy.  This year was no different.  They went to Barnard Environmental Studies School in New Haven to work in their garden.  They built a grape arbor, cleaned out the gardens and pulled out many bushes to make room for a large compost that will be used by the school.

H. Pearce Pitches In for Days of Caring

Every year, Barbara Pearce and all the employees at H. Pearce Real Estate participate in a Days of Caring project at a local non-profit.  This year was no different. Over 50 volunteers visited The Connecticut Hospice, Inc.

United Way staff volunteer at the Guilford Food Bank!!

As part of their own annual Days of Caring, United Way of Greater New Haven’s staff and their families spent time volunteering at the Guilford Food Bank, during an annual food drive in the Town of Guilford. Along with about 30 volunteers from various organizations and civic groups; we collected, screened, sorted and stocked the shelves of the food bank. As many people know the economic downturn has severely affected families and individuals all over the state. Food banks and soup kitchens across the region have faced a significant increase in requests for food.

Knights of Columbus give back at the historic Eli Whitney Museum!

For the past three years, volunteers from Knights of Columbus have participated in United Way’s Days of Caring, at the legendary Eli Whitney Museum. By assembling science learning kits for the children’s programs at the museum, the staff from Knights of Columbus provide a service that would otherwise be a very difficult project for any one person to conduct alone. By working in teams, volunteers who work for the same company but may never worked side by side, were able to come together and dedicate their time and skills and give back to the community.

PCL Civil Constructors Create a Community Garden!

If you are a Greater New Haven resident or have driven through in I-95, you probably know about the new Quinnipiac Bridge that is being constructed along Interstate-95. PCL Civil Constructors are one of the contractors currently working on the bridge, and most, if not all, of them have actually moved here to do the construction. Based out of Tampa, Florida, PCL has been a dedicated supporter of United Way and it is evident that that dedication stands no matter where they might be in the country.

UPS Paints The Diaper Bank!

Last month employees of the United Parcel Service facility located in North Haven, CT participated in United Way’s Days of Caring. Led by manager, Greg Wines, a group of about seven employees volunteered at The Diaper Bank, located, coincidentally, right across the street from their UPS facility. UPS has been a long-time supporter of United Way and our community partners.  When Greg Wines was asked if he wanted to participate, there was no hesitation.
