"Americans are not generous because we are rich; we are rich because of our generosity to one another." International author and scholar Dr. Claire Gaudiani offered the keynote address to a gathering of 120 women and men at United Way Women’s Initiative Breakfast, April 26, at The New Haven Lawn Club.
The cafeteria at Covidien's North Haven location was filled with employees and non-profit partners with one goal: to give employees the chance to connect with volunteer opportunities in their community with a cause they are passionate about. Volunteering is part of Covidien's philanthropic focus to address the needs of the communities where employees live and work to significantly impact a community's well being.
Covidien Surgical Devices and United Way of Greater New Haven have opened a new front in the battle against childhood obesity. The two organizations have teamed up to provide 5,000 Get Fit Kits to New Haven school children. The kits include a pedometer, a jump rope, a water bottle, a ball and a Frisbee.

Students and their families at Troup School had a chance to have fun while also learning how to stay fit and healthy at the school’s Family Fit Night on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. The event featured a chance to participate in a Zumba class, try out the newest Wii fit games, and many other fun activities that families can do together to be healthy and exercise. Students and families were also treated to solo performances by Troup band students.

Covidien Surgical Devices employees added a healthy component to their United Way campaign.
Covidien employees spent a sunny but blustery afternoon at Grand Acres Community Garden in the Fair Haven section of the city. The group raked leaves, began to winterize the gardens and worked on the living wall as part of Covidien's Day of Caring activities to support their United Way Campaign. Grand Acres is just one of the New Haven Land Trust's 45 gardens in the city of New Haven that utilize vacant urban plots to create community vegetable gardens.
