Better Days

A newspaper headline decries “New Year, Same Old Problems” and tells the public what they already know as well as begs the question: will we ever get it right or will barriers to peace, basic needs, and equality always exist?

Can We Win Together On Facebook?

We all know that there is nothing like a good contest to energize people. Thats why I think that from a publicity perspective the Chase Community Giving contest on Facebook is a smart move. Basically any Facebook user can lookup and vote for their 20 favorite nonprofits. The top100 votes will be awarded $25,000 each. The winners will also be moved to a second round of voting with a $1 million prize for the overall winner. As a United Way of Greater New Haven employee, that is enough money to make me pay attention and ponder how Greater New Haven can take advantage of this opportunity.

Connecticut Housing Among the Highest in the Nation

This week The Partnership for Strong Communities’ Housing Policy Brief reported;

“Connecticut has higher housing costs than most other states, according to 2008 American Community Survey (ACS) data. The ACS allows the Census and researchers to keep an eye on trends between the more intensive 10-year census”.

Support for Supportive Housing is Making a Difference

In our region, fiscal year 2008-2009 was a year of great triumphs for supportive housing. The efforts of advocates like The Partnership for Strong Communities, Reaching Home Campaign and The Lyceum Center drove home the importance of challenging government budgetary decisions. In the midst of one of the longest budgetary debates in Connecticut, previously committed Next Steps II (dollars to develop new supportive housing units) were zeroed out from the state’s FY2009 budget.

Saying Hello From “The Brand”

I remember a very long time ago (about two years ago), I attempted to help create a blog within this very organization with a very “pie in the sky” attitude. It didn’t happen. I got caught up in trying to write blogs in an organizational, impersonal tone and not staying true to MY voice. Now years later, I find myself a little older, a littler wiser and finally “I get it.”

A message to Millennial's: When will we have the Millennial Woodstock

Like so many of us boomers, the Woodstock anniversary brought back memories of a different time and in so many ways a different Country. I spent the summer of ‘69 in Ithaca taking a couple of courses and bartending. Every where you went people were hitchhiking, dropping in on each other for an instant party, listening to music and always talking about how we were going to change the world.
