The Annual Alexis de Tocqueville Award Photos

The annual Alexis de Tocqueville Award is the highest honor that a local United Way can bestow. It is presented to an individual or couple who embodies the American spirit of giving and volunteerism witnessed by Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French philosopher, as he traveled through the United States in the 1800’s.

Chris Alexander United Way of America’s 2009 Community All-Star

United Way of America has named Chris Alexander, founder of the New Haven Book Bank, the national 2008 Community All Star. Through United Way’s partnership with the NFL, Chris and her husband Bruce, recipients of UWGNH 2008 Alexis de Tocqueville Society award, were invited to attend Super Bowl XLIII. "It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you!, said Alexander.

Alexis de Tocqueville Society

The prestigious Alexis de Tocqueville Society is a national, philanthropic society honoring individuals who annually give $10,000 or more to United Way. Tocqueville members are individuals who understand the need to lead by example in their communities and their organizations.
