We all have summer memories from when we were kids. One of my enduring summer memories is swimming at our local pool. I spent lots of hours playing in the water and practicing with the swim team.

I have always thought of Clifford Beers Clinic (CBC) as a “great” place that helps kids. I knew that the Clinic was some place I wanted to be a part of; a place that I could proudly believe in the mission. After all, who wouldn’t want to stand by a mission that states:
The mission of Clifford Beers Clinic isto provide accessible community-based mental health services and advocacy that promote healthy and resilient lives for children and families

All Our Kin's Family Child Care Licensing Toolkit, which helps informal caregivers build safe, healthy, quality family child care businesses in the community, would never have been possible without the support of the United Way of Greater New Haven. Thomas Friedman's column in the NY Times today highlights the inescapable link between high-quality education and the ability to compete economically. I agree with his overall message -- that in order to succeed in today's economy, our youth will need not only good reading, writing, and math skills, but they that will also have to learn how to think creatively, critically, and innovatively. At this time last year I was comparing grad schools’, planning my next career move, and dreading the day my bathroom scale would tell me to switch to light beer. When I contemplated Education, Income, and Health the word “my” began each thought. The costs and benefits of my decisions could easily be endured, because in the end it was my feet being held to the fire.
