Yale-New Haven Hospital Delivers School Supplies
My day started at Truman School in the Hill section of New Haven. The school is immaculate and architecturally stunning as the remodel that occurred five years ago incorporated the beauty of the original structure as it was totally modernized. The reason for my visit was to accompany ten of the volunteers and leaders from Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) as they delivered a truck load of school supplies. Every year for the last ten years the employees of the hospital organize a drive as part of the United Way Annual Campaign to collect these supplies from their fellow. To date, YNHH employees have collected over 250,000 supplies for children in the Greater New Haven region.
As the kids saw the boxes of crayons, backpacks, paints and pads, their eyes were as big as saucers. When the Principal asked if they had any questions, they wanted to know how YNHH got all this stuff. They seemed surprised when we told them that the employees gave it to them because they knew it would help them learn. The concept of giving back to the community and supporting education has become part of the culture of YNHH as it has with so many other employers in New Haven and United Way of Greater New Haven is proud that we play a role in this.
We know that people and organizations care about the common good and given an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives most people will step forward and say “count on me”. We offer members of our communities a variety of ways to make a difference. Some people choose to give financially so that programs and services are supported and able to deliver measurable results. Others choose to volunteer their time to directly help a child or family or by lending their expertise to support a non-profit organization. Still others choose to become educated on community issues and advocate for new ways to improve services. And then there are some that seamlessly give, volunteer and advocate.
Our 2011 Report to the Community highlights some of the ways we are coming together. We have focused our efforts on the areas of Education, Income stability and Health because these are the essential building blocks for a healthy community and after talking to scores of people these areas are what concern us the most. United Way is proud of the work the volunteers and staff are doing and we urge you to spend a few minutes reading this report. There is a role for anyone that wants to make a difference and we would love to discuss those possibilities. If you like what you read, I would ask you to send it on to a friend. Just maybe they would also want to get involved.

I would like to thank all the individuals at Yale New Haven who took the time to think of the students at Truman School and purchase school supplies for them. I know my students were so excited to see the boxes of supplies that had been donated! Their eyes lit up when they learned that they were for our school. Later on in the day, we got a box that was chosen for our class and they were thrilled to receive composition notebooks and highlighters. Each child got to choose a notebook and today we put them to good use. Thank you for your generosity, you made the students smile! Mrs. Seely Grade 4

I feel privileged to have met the students and teachers at Truman School that day to present them with some of the tools needed to succeed in their education. I am just as privileged to represent the caring and dedicated employees at Yale-New Haven who took the opportunity to give so selflessly to benefit others. I was deeply impressed with Principal Araujo and all the incredible kids.
Giving back in order to help others is one of the most important things anyone can do, and it is encouraging to know that we were able to leave a lasting impression on this great group of young people. On behalf of Yale-New Haven I wish all the students the best of success in school.
