Who is a Community Investment Reviewer?

Amy Townsley's picture
United Way of Greater New Haven engages volunteers during its annual Community Investment process who provide the necessary leadership and expertise to identify the best opportunities for achieving our community goals.

Approximately 50 volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including businesses, nonprofits, schools, universities, churches and synagogues, have committed their time (approximately 25 hours) as well as expertise over the next few months to serve as Community Investment reviewers. It is the job of Community Investment reviewers to evaluate funding proposals submitted by agencies whose work aligns with United Way’s goals and strategies.

They will deliberate with other volunteers to make decisions about how resources should most effectively be invested in our community to ensure that United Way of Greater New Haven is having the greatest impact possible.  In addition, reviewers will also conduct site visits at agencies to build a deeper understanding of how programs are working to improve the lives of people in the region.

Reviewers are also learning about a new measurement tool United Way of Greater New Haven has adopted called Results Based Accountability (RBA) to assess program effectiveness and larger community change. RBA helps program focus on measuring success as well as using data and helps reviewers focus on programs making a difference in client’s lives.
