A Saturday at Farnam Neighborhood House

I showed up to Farnam Neighborhood House and although it was early on a hot Saturday morning, Fillmore Street was bustling with life. While I am not a morning person, I was eager to learn what the day would hold.

I knew that a vareity of programs including child care, after-school, summer and evening youth programs are available at Farnam, but when Sarah Burgett, Youth Leadership Program Assistant, invited United Way of Greater New Haven to Farnam's April 24th Healthy Family Fun Day, I was was impressed to learn that the fair was organized by its Youth Leaders.  Youth envisioned and planned for a day in which their peers and community could come together around health related information, food tastings, wellness and nutrition demonstrations as well as activities and games for all ages. What an invaluable opportunity for youth to organize an event based upon their own experiences and interests, research and dialogue. Not only did these Youth Leaders have fun, but also learned critical communication skills with their peers, parents, mentors and community as well as used key organizational and leadership tools they wil need throughout their lives.

Thirteen agencies, including Clifford Beers, New Haven Parks & Recreation and Fair Haven Health Clinic attended the fair and over fifteen agencies provided information and resources for giveaway bags.  Families asked me great questions about United Way of Greater New Haven and available resources in our community, but what also stands out in my mind was how welcomed I was made to feel.  With music playing, teenagers coming together in the courtyard, dogs barking and cars slowing down to get a view- I felt hopeful, fully present and part of the community.

I was thrilled to learn from Sarah that the youth had a great time- here's to next year!
