A message to the Boomers: 'Times They are a Changin' or Have They?

The 1960's, an era I wish I had been a part of...love, music, community, war, peace, the draft, drugs, race, gender, politics, family, industry. What an extraordinary time to be alive! My parents were married in the summer of ‘69 and did they have some stories to tell me! I, myself, am a part of GenerationX and I am proud to say to the Boomers, "you've taught your children well". You have taught us acceptance, tolerance, equality, freedom and most of all, the possibility of change. But how much have we changed? In efforts to create peace and equality, did we unintentionally create more problems?

The problems of the 60's are not that far off from the problems we face today.... we still have war, peace, drugs, race, gender, politics, and industry but we now have significant crime, educational disparities, mass poverty, mass unemployment, internet, healthcare, economics, terrorism and the environment. How much was actually solved? Have certain issues just become institutionalized? Have some issues just morphed into larger issues? I don't know. However, what I do know is that there are a multitude of variables that has brought this country to its current precarious situation. But if there is one thing I have noticed, it is that the younger generation of today is not afraid to fight like their predecessors. It may not be as obvious as the protests, marches and sit-ins of decades past but rather through the blogs (such as this) and chat rooms of today's technology. The avenue may have changed but the message still remains. Everyone has a voice, and if there is one thing we have learned, it's that change is possible when people come together.

Society is always changing and evolving...that's what makes it so interesting and exciting! The younger generation of the new millennium, came out in droves this past presidential election and now we have an African-American president. The Boomers always knew it was possible and perhaps they laid the foundation and we made it happen. We learned from history that, yes, our voice does matter and when we come together, change can become a reality. Our future is as prosperous as we make it and it is my belief that there is a generation that cares and wants to advance the common good of our communities.

Although it may seem that individualism has brought this country to its knees, I assure you that the generations of the new millennium can help it stand strong and we will LIVE UNITED once again. Our time is now.
