Making Room for Aspirations

Since kicking-off a year-long celebration of Success By 6 (SB6) turning six in May, over 150 community stakeholders have shared inspiring and hopeful aspirations for children that speak to the many accomplishments of SB6 as well as highlight the continued early childhood needs in our region.

SB6 Advisory Council members came together to talk about these birthday card wishes, identifying themes as well as personal aspirations. Council members agreed the cards reflect a inspirational and collective hope for connectedness, parent involvement, the fostering of children’s unique gifts, equal access to quality education, a joy of learning and reading, confidence and empowerment, and healthy and safe community.

The following aspirations stood out as simple yet powerful calls to action:

“…at least give every child a chance to be a hero in their own community.”

“Every child should be the center of someone’s universe.”

“I wish every child to see each day as magical”

“So simple…more quality time with their parents.”

It is easy to become cynical when we read about Connecticut’s achievement gap and disparity in our region, but these shared moments of reflection affirm that aspirations matter and can change lives. Aspirations allow the discussion to become about opportunities, not finger-pointing. So, let’s make room for aspirations in our day-to-day lives; let’s talk to our children about our hopes for them and ask people what matters.

We all have a role to play in helping children become strong individuals and successful members of our community.  How do you help children become successful? What are your hopes for children? I invite you to share what is on your mind by commenting on this blog post.  Don’t let somebody else decide what is important for our children- speak up, use your voice. We are listening!

Take a few minutes out of your day to read these aspirational cards- share them with your friends, family and neighbors and play your part in continuing an important and exciting community conversation.
