Income Infograph: Economy in the Greater New Haven Area
I have been working with United Way of Greater New Haven since June 2010 as the "New Media Intern". One of the projects I worked on was an inforgraphic. (See Full Size Version)
An inforgraphic can be described as a graph that displays its information using text and pictures to grasp the attention of the viewer in a fun and creative way. This is useful because the visual representation of the information is arguably easier to comprehend than that of bar graphs and pie charts.
Income is one of the focus of United Way that attempts to help people achieve a sustainable source of income which in turn reduces poverty, crime rates, and hunger. By spreading awareness and creating programs such as "Smart About Money" United Way of Greater New Haven has begun a foundation to prevent community members from being unprepared for a recession. Families that have the budget for a higher learning education will give their children the advantage in a competitive economy which is being increasingly affected by globalism as countries such as China and India climb out of poverty and search for foreign job opportunities. Likewise families that maintain a steady income and learn how to budget can afford a healthy lifestyle.
Since I started working with UWGNH, I quickly realized developing an understanding for graphic design is invaluable from a marketer's perspective. I had very little experience with graphic design before my presence with UWGNH so this infographic was created from the knowledge I gained since the Summer of 2010.
This infographic was inspired by the lower income families and local trends in the Greater New Haven area. The profoundness of the statistics in this infographic will surely make the reader think twice about how stable the economy is in his or her region. The fact that 32% of lower-income working families living in poverty have less than $300 in savings was enough encouragement for me to create this infographic.
Please give your opinions on the matter at hand and post your ideas for improvement so that I can make the next infographic more appealing.
