Father of Two
Mr. Jones (not his real name) is a single father of two who has been coming to the Catholic Charities/Centro San Jose Family Center for several years. He originally came in to talk to our case manger to receive assistance accessing benefits through the EarnBenefits screening program, as well as use our food pantry when he was unable to find child care, and thus employment. Recently he came to enroll his two children into one of our NAEYC accredited, full day, full year school readiness programs on Grand Avenue. His two boys, ages 3 and 4, had never been in school before. Mr. Jones has been so appreciative that his boys have a warm, nurturing and educational place for them to go to everyday and has been able to go back to work since he has child care for them.
Mr. Jones is truly amazed at the comprehensive services provided by our NAEYC accredited school readiness program and complementary Family Center. His family takes full advantage of our family literacy and parent education programs. He likes to attend them because he receives helpful tips and strategies he can use at home with his boys and enjoys the warm dinner which allows him to spend quality time with his children. He also added that the fact that we provide child care is especially critical, as a lack of child care has left him unable to participate in other community programs in the past.
Through support from the United Way funding, Centro San Jose is able to provide Fair Haven families with the quality programs and supports they need to understand the important developmental milestones in their children’s lives. All of the workshops and trainings offered by Centro San Jose provide parenting tips and strategies that can easily be applied at home in a fun and educational manner.
Mr. Jones is a wonderful and caring father who always puts his children first and would do anything to help his children achieve their potential. Mr. Jones is a strong asset to Catholic Charities/Centro San Jose’s school readiness program and Family Center!

I think it is so important for parents to feel like they have some kind of support in raising happy, healthy children who can achieve success. It sounds like this parent has found just that at the Family Center--keep up the good work!
Shital, thanks for writing this up. It's heartening to hear what its like when things are going well for someone you are helping. It seems that every person's challenges are so different that you need to customize your approach. How do you make sure you are providing the right interventions? It also seems that people are in different states of readiness to receive assistance. I am curious when you have success like with Mr. Jones has he taken advantage of other services first? Are there others who are less successful because some support is missing? If so, what are those gaps?
