United Way of Greater New Haven hosted its annual recognition event on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven. The event honored local individuals and organizations who exhibited community leadership in their efforts to advance the common good. This year’s event was sponsored by The United Illuminating Company.
A Champion for Advancing the Common Good award was presented to Diane Turner, Yale University Librarian, for her leadership in expanding Yale’s annual book drive to five additional college campuses, and to Yale University for their continued leadership and dedication to our community.
The Orange Senior Leadership program was honored with a Building Bridges award for its work in sharing information about important local issues, providing opportunities for volunteer service, and training individuals to be community leaders. Receiving special recognition in the Building Bridges award category was Regional Water Authority, The Independent, PACK, Connecticut Voices, and Yale New Haven Hospital.
The Creating Change award was presented to Experience Corps of Greater New Haven for its work in addressing significant community needs, offering creative and effective solutions, and exemplifying the kind of dedication required to create lasting change in people’s lives and in the community. Receiving special recognition in this category was All Our Kin, New Haven Diaper Bank, STRIVE, Clifford Beers Clinic, and Caring Cuisine.
The Raising Hope award was presented to the City of New Haven and New Haven Public Schools for setting the stardard for community leadership by nurturing a spirit of giving in the workplace. Receiving special recognition in the Raising Hope award category was Maureen Weaver of Wiggin and Dana LLP, Knights of Columbus, Bilco, Merrill Lynch, Bill Cholawa of Merrill Lynch, and University of New Haven.
