Tom has been on the United Way of Greater New Haven Board of Directors since 1998, serving as its Secretary, Vice Chair, Chair and is now enjoying his current role as immediate past Chair. In addition, Tom served as Chair of the Community Compass partnership, a diverse group of 30+ civic, philanthropic and corporate entities whose mission is to utilize demographic data to identify the most critical needs of the region, and to develop effective strategies for responding to those needs. He also co-chaired the Community Impact Cabinet, the group that is responsible for developing investment recommendations to the board of directors.
Tom received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from the Boston University College of Liberal Arts in 1982 and his law degree from the Boston University School of Law in 1985. While in law school, Tom completed internships with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and Greater Boston Legal Services.
Following graduation, Tom joined the law firm of Carmody & Torrance LLP and worked for 10 years in the firm's main office in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1995, Tom relocated his practice to the firm's New Haven office where he serves as its Administrative Partner. Tom concentrates his practice in civil litigation, with emphasis on commercial and insolvency litigation. He is a member of the American, Connecticut and New Haven County bar associations, and has served on the Executive Committee of the Commercial Law & Bankruptcy Section of the Connecticut Bar Association since 1994.
Tom was the first volunteer selected in the Waterbury Public Schools Partners-in-Education Mentor Program, established in 1992, and devoted 11 years to his mentoring activities with the same student, who graduated from high school in 2003. He was selected as "Mentor of the Year" of the Waterbury Public School System in 1995, and received statewide recognition from the Connecticut Mentoring Partnership as an Outstanding Mentor in 1999. In 2003, he received the Waterbury Partners-in-Education Lifetime Achievement Award. He also served on the Board of Directors of Partners-in-Education from 1993-1998.
Tom is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bethany, Connecticut where he served as its Senior Warden, as well as Clerk of the Vestry. He also serves as a lector at church services, is a lay preacher and a former youth group leader. Currently, he chairs a parish committee that is working closely with a Kenyan nonprofit that is building a residential school for AIDS orphans in the rural western province of Nambale, near the Kenya-Uganda border.
Tom and his wife, Ruth, have lived in Bethany since 1992. They enjoy travel, equestrian activities and rooting for the New York Yankees.
